Junior performance

Do you wonder what it would be like to wear the green and gold zootie and, one day, stand on the world stage?

Our junior performance and development program is the stepping stone to our high performance squad and pathway to national representation.

Our coaches understand what it takes physically, mentally and emotionally to make it the top. They walk every step with you on your rowing journey.

The program is overseen by Jacinta Edmunds, Head Coach.

Jacinta is a former Australian representative rower who medalled at the 2018 and 2019 World Rowing Championships and was selected for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. She channels her extensive rowing experience into her coaching. She trains and mentors our athletes for their rowing pathway to national selection.

Our aim is to provide an environment that is conducive to high performance and having fun along the way.

Membership brings with it an expectation of work ethic, performance and commitment to the training program.

Program

Summer

October to December (base phase)

The focus of this phase is to build endurance and technical development.

January (race preparation and racing)

The phase works on building speed, developing race skills and seat racing.

Athletes will race at local regattas as part of their training and preparation, culminating in the Queensland State Championship and potentially beyond for those selected.

Winter

May to June

Athletes will gain experience in sculling and sweep styles.  The program includes very technical on-water sessions and off-water cross training cardio sessions on the ergonomter with some running and riding.

July to September

With the beginning of the long-course season, athletes will be rowing in bigger boats and practicing skills required for long course racing, including steering their own boats.  Opportunities may be available to crew in club boats to gain valuable experience.

Eligibility

The number of athletes accepted into our junior performance and development program is limited. Selection is based on:

  • 1km or 2km ergonometer score benchmark
  • school, club or state championship results
  • technical proficiency on the water
  • physiological attributes relevant to targeted crews
  • temperament and ability to excel in a team environment
  • commitment to training sessions
